10-year journey of Firefox


Internet users are certainly familiar with the browser (browser) applications Firefox Mozilla Foundation created (The Mozilla Foundation). Firefox is a great product that is unique, because it is the browser that is open source (open source).


Mozilla released the source code of Firefox programming to the public. This makes the general public, or a volunteer open source, could also develop Firefox. March 31, 1998


Netscape programmers started a open source project. They call this project as Mozilla, a code name of the browser Netscape Navigator that is very popular in the 1990s. Mozilla comes from the word "mosaic" (a popular browser in the 1990s) and "killer".


September 23, 2002


Browser called Phoenix 0.1 released. This product is a forerunner of then known as browser Firefox.

July 15, 2003


The Mozilla Foundation was founded. The Foundation is headquartered in Mountain View, United States, this is a non-profit organization that holds the principle: "the Web is a public resource that must be always developed and protected, not commodities for sale."


In his web site, Mozilla is committed to mempromosikaan openness, innovation, and opportunity in virtual worlds.


June 15, 2004


Mozilla launches Gallery of Add-ons, which provides the tool extensions, themes, and plug-ins that can be used to enrich the users of the Firefox browser.


November 9, 2004


Mozilla introduces Firefox 1.0, a full version of the browser. To welcome its presence, the fans of Mozilla posted a full page in the daily newspaper The New York Times.

Mozilla released Firefox 3.0. Within 24 hours, Firefox 3.0 download by 8 million times. There has never been a software that is able to achieve this feat. Guiness World Record crowned Firefox 3.0 as "software applications with the most Downloads in 24 hours."

Mozilla confirms the commitment to protect the privacy of the users, with the release of the beta version of Firefox 4 features a "Do Not Track".


March 29, 2011


Mozilla released the Firefox for Android mobile devices. The Browser provides a choice of 10 languages.


April 2011


Release schedule speeds up the foundation of the new version of Firefox every six weeks. With this schedule, there are always four version of Firefox that is being done within a certain time.


Users can try out version of "Nightly" which has the update but not yet fully repaired, then there is a version of "Aurora" that is more stable, then the "Beta" version that comes before the full version.

The Total downloads of Add-ons exceed 3 billion times. Mozilla claims, they have more than 17 thousand users who also make Add-ons for Firefox.

More than 450 million people use Firefox. About 40% of the programming code written by volunteers of the open source. Firefox for your personal computer is available in 75 languages and over half using a non-language version of the United Kingdom.
